Diabetes and Hearing Loss: Explaining the Link

Most people are aware of the link between diabetes and vision loss, but many do not know that diabetes can also affect hearing! Let’s explore the link between diabetes and hearing loss.

Our inner ears are filled with tiny, delicate structures that rely on a steady blood supply to function correctly. Blood delivers essential nutrients and oxygen.

If sugar levels in our blood are too high, it can reduce blood flow, nerve damage or inflammation in the inner ear. When these tiny structures and vessels are damaged, it can reduce your hearing ability.

Studies have shown that people with diabetes are twice as likely to have hearing loss as those without diabetes. The risk increases with poorly managed diabetes.

It’s important to note that it doesn’t matter if you’re young or older; diabetes can increase your risk of hearing loss at any age, underscoring the need for proactive measures to protect your hearing.

Diabetes and Hearing Loss

Signs of hearing loss:

·         Trouble hearing in noisy places

·         Asking people to repeat themselves

·         Turning up the volume on TV or music

·         Feeling like others are mumbling

·         Developing a ringing/buzzing in your ears

Here’s the thing: this damage doesn’t happen overnight! It’s a gradual process that occurs over the years. At first, you may not notice this decrease in hearing, but this damage can lead to permanent hearing loss over time.

Just like regular eye exams are essential for people with diabetes, regular hearing tests are also crucial.

The good news is that early detection and treatment of hearing loss can significantly impact one’s quality of life and overall health, giving one the power to take control of one’s health.

Hearing loss can lead to frustration, anxiety and depression as people struggle to communicate and may withdraw from social situations.

Taking care of your blood sugar is vital for many reasons, but for hearing, it will allow you to enjoy the symphony of life for years to come. Contact our office to book your hearing assessment!
